A very common problem caused by work with keyboards is RSI. It is possible that radiation, to which VDU operators are exposed, is responsible for RSI problems as well. RSI is caused by overexertion of muscles of the hands and lower arms. It produces symptoms such as muscle fatigue, tightening, and stiffening of the muscles, inflammation of tendons, and nervous effects up to and including loss of sensation.
There are different types of Repetitive Strain Injuries:
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is damage to the median nerve inside the wrist. Symptoms include a numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the palms, one or both thumbs, fingers, and wrists and a weakness of the wrist accompanied by increasingly severe pain. The swollen tendon sheaths in the carpal tunnel can compress and irritate the median nerve.
Tenosynovitis is inflammation of the synovial sheath surrounding the tendons in the hand or wrist. Symptoms include pain, swelling, numbness, tingling of the hand, wrist, and forearm, and frequently, muscle and shoulder pain. It is caused by rapid repetitive motions.
Occupational cervicobrachial syndrome is muscle pain in arm, neck and shoulders and is caused by fast paced work and prolonged muscular contraction.
